The Tezos community is called to activate the Data Availability Layer, a pivotal technology for scaling rollups, promising a 20x to 4000x improvement in transaction bandwidth.
The Tezos community is being called upon to activate the Data Availability Layer (DAL), a groundbreaking technology introduced with the Paris protocol upgrade. This initiative is essential for scaling rollups and aligns with the Tezos X roadmap, which aims for superior performance, composability, and interoperability, according to Tezos.
The DAL is designed to significantly enhance the Tezos network’s bandwidth, thereby increasing the volume of transaction data that can be published on-chain per second. Currently, the bandwidth is confined by the capacity of layer 1 blocks. However, the DAL promises an immediate 20x improvement for layer 2 solutions like rollups, with a long-term goal of achieving a 4000x enhancement, reaching 100MB/s.
Security remains a top priority, as the DAL’s operations are safeguarded by layer 1, a feature that distinguishes Tezos in the blockchain space. Detailed insights into this can be found in a blog post by Nomadic Labs.
The implementation of the DAL not only alleviates a significant scaling bottleneck for rollups but also reduces operational costs. For instance, Etherlink, the Smart Rollup-powered Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) environment on Tezos, is designed to work with the DAL, further lowering transaction costs.
This advancement solidifies Tezos’ stature as a leader in blockchain technology, offering a more scalable solution compared to Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade.
For the DAL to function, it requires at least 67% of the Tezos stake to operate DAL nodes. While bakers are responsible for running these nodes, the broader community plays a crucial role. Members are encouraged to contact their bakers, emphasizing the importance of the DAL for scaling and ecosystem benefits. Future upgrades may propose economic incentives for bakers.
In conclusion, the activation of the rollup booster is a pivotal step toward achieving the goals outlined in the Tezos X roadmap. The community is urged to collaborate, with bakers leading the charge by running DAL nodes, and community members supporting this vital development.
